Through SoCal Jewish Student Services and SoCal Jewish Young Adult Enrichment’s Rabbi Drew Kaplan, students and young adults in the greater Long Beach area were recently enriched through the holidays season. Beginning with a pre-Rosh HaShanah “Torah on Tap” discussion for Beach Hillel, Rabbi Drew led a discussion on the holidays of the Jewish calendar for students at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB).
For Rosh HaShanah, prior to Beach Hillel’s Rosh HaShanah dinner on the second night, while it was still day, Rabbi Drew led students in text study on shofar-blasting, which was appropriately followed by a blasting of the shofar, which was especially useful for those who had not heard it that day. Following the shofar-blasting, there was a dinner for the second night of Rosh HaShanah, at which Rabbi Drew MC’ed.
For the holiday of Sukkot, Rabbi Drew was helpful in the setting up of both of Beach Hillel’s sukkot – both on-campus at CSULB, as well as off-campus. Once the sukkot were up, Rabbi Drew was involved with various activities. One was Beach Hillel’s Sukkah Hop, which travelled to multiple sukkot in Long Beach and Rabbi Drew joined the students in the festivities.
During the week, on-campus, Rabbi Drew took part in Beach Hillel’s Pizza in the Hut, in which Rabbi Drew not only sat and schmoozed with students, explaining the holiday and its practices, but also led students in shaking of the four arboreal species of the holiday.
In addition to teaching and living the holiday with students, Rabbi Drew also went down to the Moishe House of Orange County to lead a discussion on the holiday.Social tagging: Activities > Rabbi Drew
