LA Campus, Pico Shul, Opens for Rosh Hashanah

After renovations

After renovations

Beth El is proud to announce the opening of our Los Angeles Campus, a synagogue geared towards young professionals. We are calling the campus “Pico Shul” because it is on Pico Blvd. Extensive renovations were donated to make the synagogue  functional and attractive, including repairing the walls, floor, ceiling, and AC. Rabbi Yonah Bookstein will be leading services and holiday celebrations there each week.

High Holiday services were packed. Over one hundred attended  for the New Year, and Yom Kippur was even more packed with one hundred and forty attendees. The worshipers were not regular synagogue goers, but young professionals who have become distanced from Judaism.

Highlights include the reading from a hundreds of years old Torah from Lodz, Poland, the amazing Hazan, Tuli Skaist, and teachings by Batsheva Frankel, Lauren Brown, Cheston Mizel, Shlomo Seidenfeld, and Danny Kaufman.

Meals were served after each day of Rosh Hashanah and a huge breakfast hosted one hundred people.

The Pico Shul’s mission is to reach out to the thousands of unaffiliated young adults in Los Angels with social, educational, cultural and religious programming.

Shabbat on the Reggae River: An Auf Ruf, a Bar Mitzvah, and All-Night Jamming

What do you get when you cross California’s oldest and most prestigious reggae music festival and Shabbat Tent? That is what we were looking to find out.

The festival is nestled in the steep and wooded mountains of Humbolt County along the Eel River. Wherever you turn, the view of the mountains and trees is beautiful. 10,000 lovers of music sold-out the festival who camped and RV’ed wherever was possible.

Thanks to the organizers and producers of Reggae on the River, Shabbat Tent was given a very visibile and comfortable location  just next to the main venue entrance. Thanks to Elie Green and Daniel Kozmal (of Doc Green’s Healing Cooperative), the tent was decorated with futons, plants, artwork they brought up from Berkeley by cargo van. Shimon and team hung drapery from the ceiling, and at the entrances. the Shabbat Tent team also built a full mobile kitchen in the camping area for cooking and food prep so that all the meals would be fresh and delicious.

SoCal JYAE: First Gospels and Glidah Event

Ever heard the phrase “Don’t judge me” or “Who are you to judge?” The foundation for these terms were explored in Long Beach, California the other night amongst young adults. The first ever “Gospels & Glidah”event, led by Rabbi Drew Kaplan, explored the origin of these terms in the Gospels and contrasted them with similar ideas in Rabbinic Literature.

“The Gospels and Glidah event, offered a great opportunity to engage with scriptural issues pertinent to both Jewish and Christian traditions,” said Sean Sagan, an attendee. “By focusing on the concept of ‘Judgement’, we were offered an in-depth look at the Rabbinic tradition, which we could compare to Christian accounts of judgement in the Gospels.” Read More
